If you are constantly on the move, whether that be at work or somewhere else, you might be leaving yourself open for overexertion. Overexertion is the feeling your body gets when you push yourself too hard either physically or mentally. This can lead to injuries and burnout which is something none of us want. By identifying the causes of overexertion, you can take actions to protect yourself from it.
Typically, overexertion is caused by activities such as repetitive or sudden movements. When you do something in a repetitive motion for a long period of time, you are moving that same joint or muscle constantly. For example, typing or using your computer mouse all day with no break can lead to pain and discomfort in your hands. Sudden movements can also result in injuries. Doing an abrupt and forceful movement such as twisting, pulling, or reaching could result in injury. There are also factors outside your control such as the weather that can cause overexertion. If it is extremely hot or cold, your body will need to work extra hard to maintain your normal body temperature. This could cause your body to overexert itself if you need to do outdoor labor.
When you overexert yourself, your body will begin to show symptoms including pain, injury, fatigue, increased sickness, and difficulty breathing. To avoid overexertion and the symptoms that come with it you may have to switch up your routine. If you feel that you are overexerting yourself constantly, the best thing you can do is take a break and prioritize sleep. By doing this, you will feel relaxed and you can prevent mental or physical exhaustion. If you have a large workload, see if you can delegate some of that work to someone else or find time to go for a walk in between daily tasks. If you find yourself in extreme temperatures, dress accordingly or seek shelter to avoid crazy climate changes.
Overexertion can happen to anyone and it is not just physical. If you work too hard you can start to feel overwhelmed by the tasks at hand. To prevent the harmful effects of overexertion, it is a great idea to take breaks, pay attention to your body’s warning signs, and to not overdo things.
